Is flexible furniture the way to go?

The days for offices full of long, boring rows of desks are disappearing fast – but what do we replace them with? Added to that is the increased awareness of eco-friendly, sustainable products that can be adapted for various uses and more easily recycled or repurposed at the end of their working life.

Here are a couple of flexible options to consider:

Furniture Rental:

The workplace is changing faster than ever before, for businesses who don’t want the risk of buying new furniture only to find it’s not needed in a couple of years’ time, the option of renting furniture instead is a growing trend, especially for large expensive items like booths and seating units.

• Ideal if you need to upgrade your office but don’t have the capital immediately at hand to buy outright

• Or maybe you’ve got a short term office rental and don’t want to furnish it then have excess furniture when you move on

• Or perhaps you’re just not sure if that new booth you’ve got your eye on will be used enough to justify the commitment.

Flexible or Multi-use Furniture:

Think outside the box – the old ways are changing, and a choice of workspace can benefit different ways of working, so it makes sense to have flexible furniture and spaces that can double up for different tasks:

• Do you really need traditional fixed desking? Use smaller single desks that can be reconfigured easily to suit the space or try a large collaboration table instead which has the option of being repurposed as a meeting table when required.

• Must everyone have personal storage at their own desk? Why not have a bank of lockers for personal items, these can be utilized as a way to divide up different areas of the office and staff could be provided with a portable box that fits in the locker but can be carried to whichever location they’re working in.

• Is a boardroom really necessary? How often do you have full-staff meetings? Would quick catch-up discussions work better – try a standing height table with a media screen panel for more efficient meetings, or create a semi-private areas that can be used for multiple purposes such as a breakout space that can be used for presentations etc.

So stand back, take a good look around your space and get feedback from your team to come up with a plan that will increase flexibility, improve efficiency and save the cost of dated, unnecessary furniture!
